HOW TO STYLE YOUR FALL PHOTO SESSION
Fall in Michigan is hands-down one of the most beautiful times of year for family photos. The golden leaves, cozy vibes, and crisp air create the perfect backdrop. But styling your family’s outfits can feel overwhelming—especially when Michigan’s weather can swing from sunny and warm to chilly and damp within hours.
To make it simple, here’s a list of do’s and don’ts to help you look polished, feel comfortable, and make the most of your fall session.
1. DO: Coordinate, Don’t Match
Choose a color palette (earth tones, muted jewel tones, creams, soft neutrals) and have everyone pull from it. This creates a cohesive look without feeling “uniform.”
DON’T: Show up in all identical outfits. Matching white shirts and jeans can look flat and dated—coordinating colors and textures is the way to go.
2. DO: Embrace Layers
Michigan fall weather is unpredictable! Layers let you stay comfortable and add visual interest to your photos. Think cardigans, jean jackets, scarves, or a cozy shawl.
DON’T: Rely on just one outfit piece. If it’s too warm, you’ll be stuck sweating in a chunky sweater. If it’s chilly, you’ll regret skipping the jacket.
3. DO: Mix Textures and Patterns Thoughtfully
Knits, corduroy, flannel, suede boots—all add depth and warmth to your photos. A subtle plaid shirt or small patterned dress can work beautifully.
DON’T: Overload on busy patterns or large logos. They can distract from your faces and clash on camera. And please, do NOT have more than one person in a flannel pattern!
4. DO: Choose Comfortable, Season-Appropriate Footwear
Michigan sessions often involve walking through grass, leaves, or even mud. Boots and closed-toe shoes are stylish and practical.
DON’T: Wear brand-new shoes you’ve never broken in or sandals that leave you shivering if the temps drop.
5. DO: Think About Movement
A flowy dress that catches the wind, a cardigan that drapes just right—these little details bring life to your photos.
DON’T: Choose stiff, overly structured pieces that restrict movement (or make it impossible to scoop up your toddler for a cuddle shot).
6. DO: Plan for the Whole Family
Make sure everyone’s outfits complement each other. If mom wears a patterned dress, dad could wear a solid button-down, and the kids can pull in accent colors from both.
DON’T: Forget about the little things—like socks, undershirts, or hair accessories—that can either pull the look together or stick out like a sore thumb.
7. DO: Keep Comfort First
You want to remember the laughter, the hugs, and the fun—not how itchy your sweater was or how freezing you felt. If your kids are comfortable, they’re more likely to enjoy the session, too.
DON’T: Sacrifice comfort just for “the perfect look.” Happy, relaxed families always photograph better than stiff, uncomfortable ones.
