How to Keep Kids Happy and Engaged During a Photo Session

Creating a Fun and Stress-Free Experience for Your Little Ones

As a photographer with years of experience working with young children (along with having three young kiddos of my own), I know how important it is to keep little ones happy, comfortable, and engaged during a photo session. Whether your child is full of energy, a little shy, or somewhere in between, my approach is always centered on patience, fun, and capturing their natural joy. Here are some key ways I make sure we get beautiful, genuine smiles without the stress!

1. Prompts Over Poses

Instead of stiff, formal poses, I use playful prompts to create natural expressions and interactions. Rather than asking a child to “stand still and smile,” I might say, "Can you show me your best superhero pose?" or "Whisper a silly secret in Mom’s ear!" These small, engaging actions help children relax and forget about the camera, leading to authentic, joyful moments.

2. Movement is Key

Kids are naturally active, and I embrace that energy! I encourage games like running toward the camera, twirling, or playing tag with a sibling. Movement not only keeps kids engaged but also results in dynamic, heartfelt images filled with life and laughter.

3. Embrace Their Personality

Every child is different, and that’s what makes each session unique and special. If your little one is feeling shy, I give them space and ease into the session at their own pace. If they’re full of energy, I channel that excitement into fun, interactive shots. No matter their personality, I work with them—never against them.

4. Keep It Light and Fun

Sessions with me are never about forced smiles or strict rules. I keep the atmosphere light with jokes, silly noises, and playful interactions. If a child needs a quick break or a moment to reset, that’s completely okay! The best photos come when kids feel free to be themselves.

5. Let Kids Be Kids – Avoid Stressing or Scolding

One of the biggest things I tell parents is to avoid stressing or scolding their child for not smiling or not "behaving" during the session. Children pick up on that energy, and it often makes them want to smile even less! Instead, let them be themselves and trust the process. Some of the most beautiful moments come when kids are simply allowed to relax and have fun. Parents, I know it’s easy to worry about how your child will behave during the session, but I promise—there’s no need to stress! I have worked with all sorts of little personalities, and I truly love making kids feel comfortable in front of the camera. Whether they’re feeling shy, giggly, or a little wild, I have plenty of tricks to bring out their best smiles.

6. Don’t Stress – I’ve Got This!
